Waking is a miracle—
how the daylight
that greets us takes only
eight minutes, nineteen seconds
to get here from our sun,
zipping toward Earth
at a speed of 186,000 miles
per second. And our bodies—
the mysteries we carry unaware.
They say we breathe
more than 20,000 times
in a day, and our hearts beat
ten times as often.
Think about how our legs
move us steadily
toward our desires,
the wonder of an open wound
closing itself while we sleep,
how our eyes can recognize
the light in the eyes of another—
hold it an entire lifetime.
Oh i love this poem. Thank you, Carolyn, for this phenomenal catalogue of wonders!
