Please take this body
And make it a map
Of where I’ve been
And where I’ve yet to go
Grant me those crow’s feet
To honor the birds and smiling
And freckle my face
Revealing my affection for the sun
Give my skin some slack
After all these years of
Holding me together tightly
Let it be as loose and wrinkled
And relaxed as it wants
Allow my eyes to lose precision
For I see much more clearly now
This translucent canvas
Showing what’s beneath
Blue streams running rivulets
Back to their precious source
Please make this heart so big
With love and understanding
It overflows my borders
As these delicate holy bones are
Hugged closer to this earth
Before gravity lovingly lets go
Beautiful! I especially love the lines about the skin loosening. ‘before gravity lovingly lets go’ … a gentle, simple way to describe the ending of life. Poems like this are a breath of fresh air to me.
Thank you.
Thank you for the affirmation, Lorraine! All the best to you. Poetry really does it for me as well.:-)
