I once baptized myself
in a gas station sink,
thinking maybe the soap scum
could erase what the priest didn’t.
They say grace is free
but mine came with a receipt
and a bag of Funyuns
on a Thursday.
when I finally told the truth
to a stranger who didn’t bat an eye.
He just nodded,
took a swig of his grape soda,
and said,
“Yeah, me too.”
That was the closest thing to salvation
I’ve ever known.
