With meticulous care,
The Holy One attaches the wings
Of petite hummingbirds,
So they dart and linger,
A stationary wonderland.
One by one, with utter precision,
God arranges the phonic lips
Of half-arched dolphins,
So they creak and trill,
Producing ancient melodies
Guided by a discerning eye,
God paints the leaves
With fire, with murky lake water,
Applies honey dust to
The sloping backs of bees
Connects vena cava to atrium,
Frees a hanging earlobe,
Carves graceful tributaries from rivers,
Tops letters with their glorious crowns,
Infuses souls with stories and
Hangs freckles one by one by one.
Now in later years,
Creation long gone and done,
Discernment irrelevant,
God glances past childish tantrums,
Past continental crust, infectious disease,
Past worthless platinum and parliaments,
Past lava, past artifact, past border conflict
Ah, God murmurs, divine eyes dimming
Sundowning setting in, time collapsing
Who will go up, God whispers, full of faith, who
Will take up the task of creation’s end?
Light refracts on a child’s face, radiant and ready.
